What are Smart Blinds?

Every homeowner knows what blinds are, and most have had experience with or exposure to motorised window blinds. But smart blinds are another matter. Just what are smart blinds and how do they differ from standard blinds?

Smart Window Blinds: A Closer Look

Like standard motorised blinds, smart blinds have built-in motors that open and close the blinds on command. The difference between standard motorised blinds and smart blinds is the source of the command.

With standard motorised blinds "open" and "close" commands are usually sent via hand-operated remote, or in some cases a wall switch. In the case of smart blinds, the command may be sent automatically from a light sensor, a smart home system such as Google Nest, or a virtual assistant such as Amazon's Alexa which would enable you to open or close the blinds using a simple voice command. Smartphone apps also enable the opening and closing of the blinds from anywhere on earth the homeowner can get an internet signal.

Why Do Homeowners Choose Smart Electric Blinds?

There are a lot of good reasons why homeowners are willing to go the extra mile and install smart window blinds. Those reasons include:

Enhanced safety - Most intruders case a home looking for signs of inactivity before breaking in. If you go away on holiday and the blinds don't move for days at a time an intruder will take that as a green light. On the other hand, if you are raising and lowering your blinds at various times during the day and night from wherever you happen to be in the world it sends a clear "do not enter" signal to would-be burglars.

Energy efficiency - Hooking your smart blinds up to a light sensor enables you to save money by restricting the amount of light that streams in during the afternoon making it easier to maintain a comfortable environment. Less stress on your HVAC system means lower energy bills.

Convenience - The smart blind motor does not require any direct input from you. You can take control if you wish, but you can also let the light sensor or timer do the work of raising and lowering the blinds for you. It’s one less nuisance chore you have to deal with.
